Automatic calibration of tool center points

In many robot applications, such as dispensing or welding, the tool is constantly changing due to wear or deformation. As these applications often rely on the highest possible accuracy, it is necessary to regularly check and calibrate the tool center point (TCP) of the tool, e.g. after a tool change, after each maintenance, at the beginning of a work shift or even after each process cycle. The recalibration should occur automatically. This minimizes downtime, reduces scrap and rework, and increases the quality of the produced products.

The UR+ ecosystem

As a UR+ partner, we would like to facilitate the use of CAPTRON TCP measurement technology with UR robots. We have developed a URCap for the integration of the hardware, which automates the monitoring and correction of the TCP. Predefined motion sequences and control commands simplify programming. The URCap in use

The URCap includes the following services:

  • An installation page for tool calibrations with step-by-step setup of up to 10 different TCPs (measurement of X-Y-Z reference values and tool tip diameter)
  • Automatic TCP recalibration can be started manually by the operator via the installation page
  • A program node for automatic checking and recalibration of a TCP in a running program, limit values and speeds can be defined
  • The program node can be used to check, validate or recalibrate the TCP, with or without adjusting the orientation of the robot arm
     

The URCap is suitable for the following applications, among others:

What is a URCap?

A URCap is a software plug-in for robots from Universal Robots (UR).
URCap extends the functionality and user-friendliness of the robots.

Which UR robots is the URCap compatible with?

The URCap is compatible with all UR e-Series (UR3e, UR5e, UR10e, and UR16e) robots and UR20 / UR30 with Polyscope, from version 5.11.

What do I need to be able to use the URCap?

The URCap was developed for use with a CAPTRON TCP measuring unit.
The following products are supported:

URCaps are installed and configured via the robot's Polyscope control panel.

What applications is the URCap suitable for?

TCP monitoring and calibration is important for complex tasks that require precision and repeatability, like dispensing and welding.

When using different tools, the URCap allows for fast and precise checking of each tool.

Which tools are compatible with the URCap?

The TCP measuring units are primarily designed for rotationally symmetrical tools, e.g. welding rods, (conical) dispensing needles, soldering tools, plasma nozzles, drills, milling cutters, pipettes, etc.
Other tools can be calibrated with the aid of a measuring mandrel, e.g. grippers, cameras, etc.

Can I recalibrate several robots with one TCP measuring unit?

Several robots can be recalibrated with one TCP measuring unit (with a splitter cable).
The license is limited to one robot / cobot

How long does a calibration take?

The calibration process itself only takes a few seconds. 

What is the URCap activation process?

After purchasing the software, you will receive a TCP Product Key.
Activation of the license takes place via the Software License Key Generator which is entered directly on the controller.
The URCap only needs to be activated once. The license is not limited in time and is therefore a one-time purchase.
